The American Kennel Club announces nationwide registration statistics each year. This year, the statistics revealed that for the 20th year in a row, the Labrador Retriever was the most popular dog breed in America. This gentle, highly intelligent and family-friendly breed from Canada has remained the most popular breed in the United States likely due to its versatility as a hunting breed comes and its variety in pleasant colors. Yellow, black and chocolate are the main colors of Labs, and because of their aptitude to please their owners they usually excel as guide dogs for the sight impaired, or can also be included in search-and-rescue teams, or used in drug detection by police.
What about all the other great dog breeds? Just because your favorite might not happen to correspond with the AKC’s top dog doesn’t mean your dog is any less lovable, loyal, intelligent, or cute.
