You can get all the training advice in the world for your puppy, dress him up in the best canine clothing imported from Europe, and take him to the best dog parks to hang out with other elite pooches — but at the end of the day, the one true thing to remember is that puppies are cute. Your puppy may disappoint you sometimes by forgetting to “go” outside. He may sometimes tear your favorite objects to shreds if you forget to put them away. He might even take up hiding your favorite shoes. But, alas, we forgive, all because of love, and cuteness.

So today, we hosting Celebrate Cute Puppies Thursday here at Terrier Puppy Training. The following videos are provided for your viewing enjoyment. Just remember, puppies are cute for a reason, so have an open heart and be ready to forgive the many errors of puppydom.

People who use collars on their cats have some extra considerations to ponder when deciding whether or not collaring is such a great idea. For one thing, cats tend to get themselves into some sticky outdoor situations, including climbing trees to escape perceived threats and real predators. A cat in a normal sort of collar could get hung up in a tree and find himself unable to get down. Tragically, many indoor/outdoor cats fall victim to just that scenario each year, and because they have wandered out of sight or hearing range, they often never make it down from the tree they get stuck in, usually by the collar that was meant to protect them in case they got lost. Collars with identification tags are important for all pets who live outdoors, since if the pet were to be found by another person, that person would know that this pet belongs to someone, and would have a way to contact the owner and return the pet. So, if you have a cat who spends time both indoors and outdoors, what can you do to help protect him from being lost or taken in by someone else without jeopardizing his health if he gets trapped in a tree?

Thankfully, there are breakaway collars available for cats. In fact, most of the major US pet retail chains no longer carry the old style cat collars, but only the new breakaways. Unfortunately, many of these breakaway collars do not stay on properly. My cat, who just got one the other day, has taken it off of himself about four times. Another safety option i nthis case is to have your cat micro chipped, so that if he is found and turned in to the local shelter, he can be scanned and you can have your cat returned to you in no time. You can also install an electronic cat door in your home that only responds to that cat’s micro chip, so that other animals cannot enter. This is important not only for your cat, but for home security as well, since you wouldn’t want unknown animals or wild ones like raccoons and skunks entering through a regular pet door.

Pets and travel make for odd bedfellows. This has always been the case, even with pets who seem to have been born for the open road. Whenever you know you will be traveling with your pets, there are certain considerations every responsible pet owner must think about. The safety and comfort of the pet are two of these. It just isn’t a matter of throwing your two dogs into the back seat together and hitting the highway. Just like with toddlers, there could be dangerous fights. Or your dogs could crawl underneath the car seats and emerge between your feet and the pedals, which would definitely not be good. More and more people take their pets on airlines these days, too. Crating your pet for air travel is something you need to plan for carefully, since pets can experience anxiety about flight just as humans can.

Here are some of the things you should always do in advance when you plan to travel with your pet. Click on the image below and find out the best ways to make travel easier on your pets and on you, too.

The American Kennel Club announces nationwide registration statistics each year. This year, the statistics revealed that for the 20th year in a row, the Labrador Retriever was the most popular dog breed in America. This gentle, highly intelligent and family-friendly breed from Canada has remained the most popular breed in the United States likely due to its versatility as a hunting breed comes and its variety in pleasant colors. Yellow, black and chocolate are the main colors of Labs, and because of their aptitude to please their owners they usually excel as guide dogs for the sight impaired, or can also be included in search-and-rescue teams, or used in drug detection by police.

What about all the other great dog breeds? Just because your favorite might not happen to correspond with the AKC’s top dog doesn’t mean your dog is any less lovable, loyal, intelligent, or cute. The infographic below shows the top 15 dog breeds in the US, along with a whole lot of statistical information about each breed. It’s a dog lover’s paradise of knowledge. Click to expand:

Everyone knows that all dogs are descendants of ancient wolves, harkening back thousands of years to the beginning of mankind’s relationship with canines. Domesticated dogs all began long ago as wolves, which explains a lot about why they look and act the way they do alone, in groups, or within a family setting. Some domestic dogs still resemble wolves closely. Huskies and Malamutes have similar features and appearances, for example; Chihuahua’s and Papillons do not look very wolf-like. Wolves are sometimes known to attack domestic dogs, although it is not a widespread happening.

The following infographic contains some interesting insights into several breeds and just how connected they are, directly or indirectly, to their wolfish ancestors. (This explains a lot about my Shih-Tzu!)

Grooming your pet can be one of the most rewarding, yet challenging, things you do for yourself and your dog. Because all breeds of dogs have slight differences in their coats and nails, grooming for these animals needs some adjustment. Dogs who have longer hair will need daily grooming, but breeds with short hair can often get by with once a week grooming. Being sure your dog is feeling relaxed first will help get everything done smoothly. The following tips will help you to get off to a great start without having to worry that you may have done something to frighten your dog or otherwise sour him or her to grooming for the rest of his life. Here are some things you can do be sure you are always doing the best thing for your type of dog or puppy.

Get your puppy familiarized with grooming from a very early age. Before you try grooming your pup, be sure you have spend ample time holding him, petting his ears and paws, and getting him used to the idea that you will be touching him. When grooming time comes around, he will not be as nervous.

Always pay attention to spots your dog enjoys being touched most; perhaps she likes to be rubbed behind the ears, or enjoys having her from paws handled. These little things can be used as treats to reward your pet for being so patient and good during grooming.

Diseases, and parasites such as fleas, can all be controlled by regular grooming. A dog with matted hair tends to attract both of these problems, but when you keep the matts out, natural oils get distributed more evenly and help to give your dog a nice shiny coat. To remove tough tangles, comb in the direction of hair growth with short, steady strokes, being careful not to hurt the dog.

Sometimes the animal is not the only one who gets nervous about grooming. If you are a pet owner who is uncertain of your abilities to groom your dog, visit your veterinarian for some initial advice. You might also consider visiting your local pet shop, pet grooming salon, and library to gather the best tips. If you are still nervous before time to start grooming, play some soft music and light a relaxing herbal incense to help you unwind before you break out the brushes and nail clippers, and don’t forget — keep your dog happy. Then grooming will be something he looks forward to, rather than runs away from.

Dogs are a lot like us in some ways we might not readily notice. For instance, dogs and people both like to feel happy and secure. Dogs and people want to be loved and cared for, and to have a safe place to sleep and live. When we are left out in the rain, we tend to be equally perturbed, if not outright put off. The difference is, when someone goes wrong for us as people, we tend to be a little more capable of handling the problem than our canine friends. We, as rational beings, with fully functional hands and opposable thumbs, can get up and go make ourselves a sandwich if we’re hungry, for example. Or pour ourselves a nice cup of tea if we are cold or can’t relax.

Puppies can’t do any of that, of course. They don’t have opposable thumbs, and they can’t reach things with their cute and furry (but stubby) little arms anyway. They also can’t communicate as well as you and I, and so much of their distress, when released into the world outside their fuzzy little minds, comes out in the form of barking, growling, or crying (whining, as some describe the sound.) Poor little things! So then, how do you know if little Tybee the Terrier has a bout of insomnia?

“The first clue,” said Sheila Ramstein, a noted dog psychologist and star of a popular direct tv family package show, “is that the pup might seem a bit agitated upon lying down. It’s more noticeable to people who normally sleep with their dogs, since the dog will not go straight off to bed as usual. He might instead go round and round in circles, plunk himself down with a heavy sigh, scratch on the bed repeatedly — only to get right back up and repeat the whole exasperating cycle.” That, she says, should be the tip off to owners that their dog does indeed have insomnia.

What can be done about it, though? Lots of things can help your precious puppy to sleep. Try giving him or her a little beanbag to lie on, and provide something with a soft ticking sound nearby. These have been found to sooth sleepless puppies quite well. Also, avoid feeding the doggie late at night. Be sure he has a blanket and some favorite cuddle toys nearby. This will be most helpful. If all of that fails and the insomnia lasts more than one night or two, consult your veterinarian.

Tornadoes once again blasted their way across the south this week, leveling everything in their path. Alabama is a state hard hit in this, the worst tornado season on record in the US since weather data started to be recorded back in 1950. With over 500 human lives lost in several states combined, and hundreds more still unaccounted for, it has been the deadliest season ever. The loss of life and property damage are immense — and human concern is overwhelming to me, of course. But, I have always also wondered what becomes of livestock and family pets during destructive natural disasters of this magnitude. This morning, I read a news story that provided me with some insight.

For one family, at least, whose home was almost completely destroyed by the tornado that raked over their North Smithfield neighborhood, a missing pet made a heroic return three weeks after the storm blew him away. The family dog, Mason, had not been seen since the tornado struck. The terrier mix had been trying to hide in the garage and was blown away in the high winds as the storm swept over the house. The family began searching for Mason, but weeks of staying on the lookout yielded no sign of him. Until one day, when the family returned to their home site, they found Mason waiting for them on the front porch.

Both of Mason’s front legs were broken, and he was in pretty bad shape. His fur was severely matted and tangled, embedded with debris, and Mason was dehydrated and starving. Certain that they could not care for the dog themselves, the family contacted the local animal shelter and asked them to come pick him up. The animal shelter arrived, assessed Mason’s condition, and arranged to have surgery performed to help keep him alive. Mason was facing not only broken bones, but infection that had spread through his limbs because he was forced to drag himself along on the broken legs for so long. After much medical attention, the doctors think Mason will be just fine, and as soon as the family have taken care of their housing arrangements, they plant to take Mason back in.

“We can’t wait to have him home again,” one family member stated.

According to direct tv listings, cleaning up after a disaster of this magnitude is unimaginable to most of us, but so is the joy of finding a pet who had been missing for long. Even amid the worst that mother nature deals out, there can be these small miracles. That is truly amazing, when you think about it.

Ever spotted a clearly lost, confused, and hungry dog alongside the road in a deserted rural area and wondered “what up with that?” You may have wanted to stop and pick up the poor beastie, take him home with you, give him a bath and some Gravy Train, and maybe even keep him as your very own pet. That’s a noble idea, but before you can do that, there are some things you need to do first.

Let the world know you found a dog. This way, if anyone you know of has recently had a dog go missing, someone will have heard about it and maybe the dog can be returned to its owner that way.

Try to locate the dog’s owner if possible and return the dog. If word of mouth doesn’t pan out for you, read the local newspapers and see if there have been any lost dogs lately that match your foundling’s description. Try to make contact if you suspect you might have found someone else’s dog.

If that fails, take the dog to a vet as soon as possible for and exam and vaccinations. Assuming you have had no luck finding the dog’s owner or owners, you should be sure either way to take the dog to a veterinarian for an examination, to make sure the dog is in good health and up to date on shots.

Make an appointment with a professional pet groomer. If the dog you have found has been out in the wild for some time, its hair could be too matted for you to groom yourself. Taking the dog to a professional who knows how to de-tangle and clip will be safer for you and the dog.

Give your new doggy time to adjust to his new life. Your dog has probably gone through some trauma recently, if you found him beside a road alone. Perhaps some cruel person drove him far from home and dropped him out, or he ran away and got very lost. Whatever the case may be, this dog will need time to truly warm up to you. Don’t be worried if he is very shy at first, or if he seems to be depressed or “blue.” Sooner or later, your new dog will feel right at home around you.

Get your new dog some toys of his very own and make sure there is a small space in the house that he can call his own. It might be a pet bed with a blanket, a crate, or even a laundry room sealed off by a baby gate. This will help him feel secure and safe while he is getting adjusted to your household. Also, to keep your dog company, check out lowest price direct tv and keep the tv on for your dog while you’re away!

Owning a dog is much more than just that, it is adding another addition to the family. Dogs are an excellent way for a family to come closer together because it is something everyone in the family can enjoy. One fantastic reason to own a dog is because no matter how bad your day is going, that one thing will always be there for you no matter what. Talking to most of my friends and to other dog owners, nearly all of them counted their dog as another family member. The bond a dog can bring to a family is like no other.

Growing up, I always had a dog beside me to come home to or to play with. Having a pet there for me when I came home from school or anywhere always gave me something to look forward to. Showing off the awesome tricks my dog could do in front of all my friends was an awesome feeling, even if it was just telling the dog to sit or fetch. Owning a dog also can bring much entertainment when having guests over, since the dog is mostly always the first one to greet the guest at the door with a nice sloppy kiss. This instantly makes your guests feel welcome.

Pets provide a certain love and comfort. Cuddling up with a fury little dog late at night and watching it fall asleep on top of your lap is a feeling you can’t get anywhere else. Dogs are usually always in a good mood, unless they haven’t been fed yet, and will always give you that certain warm comfort whenever you need it. On top of that amazing comfort, you will always have a good friend home and will never ever be home alone. I’ll admit that sometimes movies still scare me, and whenever I need my pet there to protect me, he’s always there.

If you are someone who desperately needs to get out more or needs more exercise in general, having a dog will definitely get you out there. There are so many different activities you can do with a dog that will help you burn those calories and get you in shape, as well as get your pet in shape. One of the most common activities is walking, most dogs absolutely love to go on walks and most of the time will be ahead of you. If walks just aren’t your thing, go out and buy some tennis balls and play fetch with your dog. Most active dogs will play fetch until they are literally too tired to move. This can help with endurance and arm strength too. If you have a small yard and you want to do these activities just search for your local park where dogs are allowed.

If you are contemplating getting a dog of your own, I would highly recommend you go out and get one. The benefits are so great and it’s definitely worth it.
